How a heat pump works
In warm weather a heat pump cools like an air conditioner, moving heat out of the house. When heat is needed, it reverses the refrigeration cycle and moves heat in. One system covers both seasons, which suits a climate with long summers and short, mild winters.

Some heat pump systems include supplemental electric heat. Configurations vary, but generally:
- Auxiliary heat turns on automatically when the system calls for extra heating, such as during defrost or a big temperature recovery.
- Emergency heat is a separate mode that runs the supplemental heat on its own, for when the heat pump can't run.
If auxiliary heat seems to be running far more than usual, it's worth having the system evaluated. Don't bypass or rewire controls to stop it.
