Why AC units fail in the Arizona summer (and the parts that go first)

A Phoenix-area air conditioner can log over 2,000 cooling hours between May and October. That kind of run time doesn't break systems randomly — it breaks the same handful of parts, in roughly the same order, every year. Knowing which ones tells you whether you're looking at a $200 afternoon or a replacement conversation.

1. The capacitor — the most common no-cool call in the Valley

The run capacitor gives the compressor and condenser fan the jolt they need to start. Heat kills them, and a roof or west-facing patio in July is about the worst environment there is. Most Valley capacitors last five to eight years instead of the ten they're rated for.

What it feels like: the thermostat calls for cooling, you hear a hum or click outside, but the big fan doesn't spin. Air from the vents is room temperature or slightly warm.

  • Cheap and fast to fix — usually under an hour
  • A bulging or leaking top is a visual giveaway
  • Running a system on a weak capacitor is what eventually kills the compressor

2. The condenser fan motor

The outdoor fan pulls heat off the coil. When its bearings wear out or it overheats and trips on thermal overload, the system keeps running but can't reject heat, so pressures climb and the unit shuts itself down — often re-starting an hour later so it seems intermittent.

Intermittent cooling in the hottest part of the afternoon, with normal cooling in the morning, is the signature.

3. A dirty condenser coil

This isn't a failure, it's neglect, and it's the one we see most on homes near open desert, new construction, or a dusty alley. A coil packed with dust and cottonwood acts like a blanket over the part of your system whose only job is to shed heat.

A loaded coil doesn't usually stop the system. It just quietly adds 20 to 30 percent to your run time and your bill, and it shortens compressor life every season it goes unwashed.

4. Low refrigerant charge — which always means a leak

Refrigerant is not fuel. It doesn't get used up. If a system is low, there is a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding it is paying to cool the outdoors.

Signs are ice on the copper line set or the indoor coil, long run times with weak airflow, and a system that cools fine at 8am and gives up by 3pm.

  • Ask for a leak search and a written result before anyone adds refrigerant
  • R-22 systems are the expensive case — that refrigerant is phased out and priced accordingly

5. The compressor

The compressor is the expensive one, and it almost never fails first. It fails because something else was ignored — a weak capacitor, a filthy coil, or a charge that was low for two seasons.

What actually prevents most of this
